I am the proud swim coach of over 50 Special Olympic athletes. Between the months of October and February each year we meet once to twice a week at Crystal Pool in Victoria, Canada and swim for an hour.
I have been coaching this incredible group of people for over 5 years. The first year I coached I discovered that many of the athletes had no sense of just how far they could swim. The second year I challenged them to a 1 hour continuous swim. Almost all of the athletes swam over 1 kilometer and many over 3 kilometers. They collectively swam from the pool to BC Ferries.
Each year I encourage the athletes to challenge themselves and swim more and more … and they do.
As a side project I approached a small group of the athletes to see if they would be interested in swimming in a relay across the English Channel. Without hesitating they said YES!
This incredible group of 6 athletes have formed a team – the Spirit Orcas – and are now in a three year training program that will bring them to and across the English Channel. Year one they will swim the length of Cowichan Lake; it is the same distances at the channel. Year two they will swim across the Strait of Georgia. It too is the same distance as the Channel. It is also the same temperature. Year three they will head to Dover, England and swim from England to France.
More information will be posted here in the upcoming months.
